Western Monarch New Year’s Count: Dec. 26 – Jan. 10

The annual New Year’s Count started in 2017 and is a second count during the overwintering period. This additional count helps us understand how the ovwerintering population changes through the winter, and also helps us understand how and when monarchs are using particular overwintering sites. For Example, some sites are used earlier in the winter, and some are used later in the winter. The New Year’s Count occurs during a three week window beginning around New Year’s. This year, the New Year’s Count runs from Saturday, December 26 to Sunday, January 10.

Contact your regional coordinator to let them know you will be counting your site for New Year’s this year!
